This exhibition of fifteen prints from the Carter’s permanent collection embraces both Smith’s American Indian heritage and the modernist abstraction of artists like Dutch painter Piet Mondrian (1872–1944).</p> <p>Smith’s bicultural experiences informed his devotion to geometric patterning and pure colors—he derived formal elements from the design and craft of native peoples and the avant-garde’s credo of non-representation and economy of expression.</p> <div class="field field-type-date field-field-ex-dates"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <span class="date-display-start">May 25, 2010</span><span class="date-display-separator"> - </span><span class="date-display-end">December 5, 2010</span> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-featured"> <div class="field-label">featured:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> not featured </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="filefield-file clear-block"><div class="filefield-icon field-icon-image-jpeg"><img class="field-icon-image-jpeg" alt="image/jpeg icon" src="http://www.cartermuseum.org/sites/all/modules/filefield/icons/protocons/16x16/mimetypes/image-x-generic.png" /></div><a href="http://www.cartermuseum.org/sites/all/files/images/1968-404_s_CROP.jpg" type="image/jpeg; length=23678">1968-404_s_CROP.jpg</a></div> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-related-content"><legend>Related Content</legend><div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-related-works"> <div class="field-label">related works:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/works-of-art/1968-404">1968.404</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/works-of-art/1968-396">1968.396</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/works-of-art/1968-400">1968.400</a> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> http://www.cartermuseum.org/exhibitions/leon-polk-smith-the-tamarind-lithography-workshop#comments Mon, 19 Apr 2010 15:37:01 +0000 admin 26720 at http://www.cartermuseum.org Ansel Adams: Eloquent Light http://www.cartermuseum.org/exhibitions/ansel-adams-eloquent-light <p>This exhibition of forty landmark and lesser-known works by the renowned artist-photographer is drawn from the Carter’s holdings and a private collection.</p> <p>Ansel Adams was the last major artist to subscribe to the romantic tradition of American landscape, an artistic lineage that included Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Cole, William Henry Jackson and Carleton Watkins. Together, the careers of Abbott, Bourke-White, and Evans chronicle the fortunes of the medium during this important decade.</p> <p>A scholarly catalogue published by the University of California Press accompanies the exhibition.</p> <p><em>American Modern: Abbott, Evans, Bourke-White</em> has been co-organized by the Amon Carter Museum and the Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville, Maine.
